Bed bugs thrive in large cities with a lot of public transport, institutions, and other people. People who work a lot and travel frequently have a greater chance of picking up the insect after staying in a hotel or taking a train ride. You can't stop them from coming unless you are extra vigilant.
It is a good idea to bring some pesticides with you when you travel. You can spray your luggage and use it in your hotel room. Wash your clothes immediately upon arrival and inspect everything you have brought for any eggs or adult bugs. Don't forget your coat and car seats.
Bed bugs are attracted to dark places where they can hide. They will crawl underclothes, walls, and cracks in your floors. If you have clutter in your home, you will need to clear it out before you begin the extermination process.
